The Patriots had fortified their positions in advance and put up a strong defence, but they were outnumbered and outgunned by the British forces. After several days of fighting, the Patriots ran out of ammunition and supplies and were forced to surrender on May 12th. After capturing Wilmington, the British continued their offensive northward towards Virginia. They eventually joined forces with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, leading to Cornwallis’ surrender and effectively ending hostilities in North America east of the Mississippi River.
What Did the Wilmington 10 Do?
The Wilmington 10 were a group of African American men who were wrongfully convicted in 1971 of arson and conspiracy in burning a grocery store in Wilmington, North Carolina. Racial tension and allegations of prosecutorial misconduct marked the trial. The convictions were overturned in 1980 after it was revealed that the prosecutor had withheld evidence and that the trial judge had made biased rulings.
Despite being acquitted, the members of the Wilmington 10 continued to face discrimination and harassment.
