What was the Importance of Wilmington?
It is estimated that between 1740 and 1820, more than 10,000 African slaves were brought to Wilmington through the transatlantic slave trade. This dark history has led some to label Wilmington as “the Slave Capital of America.” While this moniker is undoubtedly accurate, it is essential to remember that Wilmington was also home to a large population of free African Americans who played a significant role in the city’s economy and culture.

What was the Wilmington Campaign of 1781?
They believed that the Capture of Wilmington would be easy because it was a small city with little defences. However, they underestimated the Patriot militia who were defending the city. The first attempt to take Wilmington was on February 7, 1781, when a naval force of nine ships tried to sail up the Cape Fear River but was met with heavy fire from Patriot cannons on both sides.
The British ships were forced to retreat and suffered heavy damage. A second attempt was made on April 23, 1781, by a combined force of ground troops and navy ships. This time they could get past the Patriot cannons and land troops south of Wilmington near present-day Southport.
The Patriots had fortified their positions in advance and put up a strong defence, but they were outnumbered and outgunned by the British forces. After several days of fighting, the Patriots ran out of ammunition and supplies and were forced to surrender on May 12th. After capturing Wilmington, the British continued their offensive northward towards Virginia. They eventually joined forces with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, leading to Cornwallis’ surrender and effectively ending hostilities in North America east of the Mississippi River.
