Is Missoula a Ski Town?
Situated along the Clark Fork River near Rocky Mountain Front, Missoula is known for its year-round recreational opportunities. Salish Indians inhabited the area surrounding Missoula before European settlement began in the 1860s. The first settlers were Marcus Daly and Frank Worden; they established ranches near Bonner and Stevensville, respectively.
In 1866, Jacob Resendez built a log cabin on Ninemile Creek to serve as a trading post for miners headed upstream to Virginia City; this became known as Hellgate Trading Post. Trade increased after John Mullan constructed a wagon road connecting Fort Benton with Walla Walla in 1862; following Mullan’s Road through present-day Ravalli County brought settlers into the Bitterroot Valley from both east and west.
